Blue Moon, December 2009
Have you ever heard the phrase, “Once in a Blue Moon”? Have you ever wondered what it meant?
The term once in a blue moon is used to signify something that doesn’t happen that often; something that is rare in occurence. For example, when asked, “How often do you ride your bike to school?” Someone who always rides the bus or gets picked up by friends might say, “Oh, once in a blue moon” Meaning, they rarely ride their bike to school.
Astrologically, the term is used to represent when there is a full moon twice in a calendar month. Generally there is only one full moon per month. Months in which there are two full moons are very rare and occur approximately every 2-3 years (2.7154 to be exact).
So, this approaching New Year’s Eve will be special — you will have the chance to see a second moon this month. While it won’t be “blue” in color, it is a rarety.
