It’s that time of year when many people make New Year’s resolutions. Do you know what a resolution is? It’s a promise that you make to yourself, usually to do something to better yourself or your world.
My resolution this year is to follow our Wellington Landings Three R’s: to be respectful, responsible, and resilient. I know that you have been told that this is how a Landings student is to act, but I think it applies to me as a teacher, as well.
I try be respectful of all my students, and I know that you want to be respected by your teachers. But respect is a two-way street. It’s hard for me to respect a student who doesn’t respect me. So this is one we both need to work on.
Responsibility for me means that I need to be prepared for every class I teach. With five different classes each day, sometimes this is hard. It would be easy to give you a free day, but you wouldn’t learn what you need to. For you, responsibility means being prepared, too. It doesn’t usually mean having homework done, but it does mean having your music ready, and being ready to work.
Resilience means learning from our mistakes, and not making the same mistake twice. When things don’t go the way we want them to, sometimes we need to take a new approach. So expect a few changes this semester, as I try some new techniques. And please don’t fight the changes. New can be fun!
