It’s All That Matters (By Elly)

Albert_Einstein__1879_1955____mediumElly is our Blogger of the Week. This post is written “as is” from Elly.

This week in science we talked about matter. Matter takes up space. Even gases take up space. All matter has density. Density is how much matter is in something. All matter has physical properties like color. Once you look into an empty glass again, you see it differently. See if it matters.

In my opinion, matter is quite fascinating. I think it’s interesting because all of the experiments you can do with water and ice.

Speaking of experiments, here’s one you can do:

“Melt Away”

Materials:
empty milk carton
water
freezer
large bowl
salt

Directions:

  1. Fill the empty milk carton with water.
  2. Put it in the freezer and leave it over night.
  3. The next day, takethe ice out and put it in a bowl.
  4. Sprinkle on some salt.

What happened? Post it here! Give us some other experiments to do.

Well done Elly, I like how you explain what you are learning and give such a detailed example.

I did the experiment with Elly and it worked. Yippee. Woo-hoo. Yay.

Elly: What a great blog entry! I think you have a great future as a scientist and a blogger.

When I read about the experiment you posted, I was reminded of one of my favorite experiments about matter that uses corn starch. Have you tried that one?

Also, I really appreciate that you took the time to cite your sources as part of your blog. My background is in English and I always try to remind people how important it is to give credit for original work! It takes a lot of energy to be creative and write things, doesn’t it?

You did a wonderful job!

I tried your experiment and I know what happens. I just used an ice cube from the freezer. The salt disintergrates and the ice melts. There’s no salt on it but the top feels like it has salt on it. And it tastes really salty.

Great Blog post.

I couldn’t find any English/grammar errors and it was well written.

Also it made me think. To me that is the best part about blogging – how it makes your readers (and you) think more about everything!

Keep up the good work!

I enjoyed your post Elly. My class is studying matter too! We did an experiment where we weighed balls of clay and then flattened them like pancakes and weighed them again. We predicted whether the weight would change or not. What do YOU think happened? Maybe you can try this out.

Great job, Elly. Science is one of my favorite subjects. You gave a great description of matter. I love that you added a photo to your blog post as well. It sounds like you are learning lots of neat stuff in your classroom!

Elly,
You did such a good job with your blog that I am going to show it to my 8th grade language arts students. I can tell that you enjoyed your experiment and commend you for writing about it so well. Congratulations!

I did the experiment Elly said. The salt crakced and melted the ice. It was very fun!
