Technology Final Exam Study Guide
3rd Quarter 2009-2010
This quarter we have explored how technology is created through the design process. The design process is a process that uses problem solving to arrive at the best solution. When you use the design process to solve problems, you identify or select the need, desire or problem, you may gather information you need, you develop possible solutions, you select what you think is the best solution, you try it out, you evaluation the solution, make adjustments as needed, and finally you communicate the solution.
In an essay of at least three pages, tell how you used the design process to develop an idea for a project you have done in this class (such as designing and constructing a paper tower or manila folder platform) and brought it to completion. In your essay, tell how each of the steps in the design process played a role in successfully completing your project. Be specific.
You are telling the story of your experience imagining, creating and sharing.
You may include sketches along with your writing to illustrate certain points you make. Be specific.
You can handwrite it on paper (three pages), or in Microsoft Word (size 12 font, one page, single spaced, double-spaced between paragraphs). Then post to blog.

Design Process – My class this quarter is Technology. We used the design process to create new and unique videos to post to the blog. It was really fun and we worked in groups and came up with new ideas. The design process was hard, but exiting while creating new plans. The groups were about three to four people, we didn’t all agree on the ideas, but we found some that we all liked. In the design process we made models, sketches, pictures, and videos. It took a few weeks to finish each design, but in the end we succeeded and made great ideas work.
Starts with an idea – The first thing we had to do was to get together in our group and start with an idea. The idea we started with was good, but wasn’t the best. Then we brainstormed ideas so we can all put our minds to it. Each of us went around in circle telling our ideas. We each came up with at least one to two ideas. Finally we got our idea and started building a masterpiece. Each model we made took a day, but the videos took more than a week. The editing took about two days to make the titles, put our names in, make the effects, and save it on the computer.

Paper Tower – The first model we made was the paper tower. We made the paper tower out of a manila folder and fifty centimeters of tape. We had to make the tower over and over again about four times. The tallest paper tower is six feet high, and ours worked out to be three feet and eight inches, pretty close. It was a big achievement as our first few towers were no tall at all. While we were working on the paper tower, we had to record every step to the final product. After we finished the recording, we had to do the editing. The first thing we did was the transition from one slide to the other. The second thing we did was adding our names to the slide. The last thing we did was adding the color to the video, and putting it all together.
The second model we made was to build a platform made out of a manila folder and twelve inches of tape. The idea was for the platform to hold a twenty five pound weight and as many text books as possible. We only made two different models, but our second one was the best. The record of what the best manila platform could hold was about eighty to ninety textbooks and a twenty five pound weight. Our manila platform only held nine textbooks and a twenty five pound weight. Then we did the editing, were we had to put in the transitions, put our names in, and to add the color.

iMovie – iMovie is the program we used to edit the videos we made. At the end of every movie we always had to edit. It took us two days to edit each movie. The challenges we had were trying to figure out how to use iMovie, however it was really good getting help from the other students.
The camera we used was a video camera for capturing all our work on tape. The camera was easy to work with and we didn’t have any trouble with it. But that camera that was on the computer did not have any sound on the video. The sketches we did didn’t take long, and were only on the manila folder design were we drew a plan out on a piece of paper.
Our group worked really well together, we agreed most of the time. We had some challenges, such as when we had to edit our movies and when we had to import videos to the slide. But in the end, it all worked out well.
