Black History Month
Posted by: mrgaston in Required, tags: black history, black history month, culture, discussionAs you all know February is the Month set aside to celebrate the many achievements of African-Americans. This was begun by Dr. Carter G. Woodson when he set aside to study the history of Blacks in America (something that had not been done before). It initially started as “Negro History Week” in 1926 and became “Black History Month” in 1976. So this year we celebrate the 34th year of “Black History Month.”
Now along with a month celebrating African-Americans, we also have: “Native American Heritage Month”(November) “Women’s History Month”(March) and “Hispanic Heritage Month”(Sept. 15-Oct. 15). So here are some of the questions to discuss:
Is “Black History Month” necessary, or do you think it is important still? Do you think it is necessary in America now to have a month for different cultures, for example do we now need a month for Asian culture etc…? Or should they all just be taught together throughout the year?
