4th Grade FSA- ELA Writing

Hi Parents,

Our students are currently preparing for their FSA Writing test, which is the beginning of March. Over the next few weeks we will be putting the final touches on our writing by completing  3 informative essays and 3 opinion essays.

Ms. Buntin’s Class Update December

As we work on comprehension in non-fiction texts, we are focusing on Evidence and Elaboration techniques, such as facts, quotes, statistics, anecdotes and opinions.   We are using these techniques to support our summaries and conclusions as we discuss and write about topics from non-fiction books.

Report Cards

Report cards go home Dec. 3.  Please sign and return the report card envelope to school the following day.

Ms. Buntin’s Lastest Update 11/5/15

In Reading, we are on Unit 3 , which switches from fiction to non-fiction texts. Our focus is gathering key ideas and details, connecting ideas to determine the main idea, and transferring all the strategies we know about fiction to non-fiction books for better comprehension.

In Writing, we are still writing essays, but have moved from Opinion  to ‘Informational” essays.  As writers, we are making deliberate choices as to what and how information is presented in essays,  and making big revisions to our writing.

Reminder  ANOTHER Field trip December 1.  If you would like to chaperone please contact me.

UNIT 5 – Chapter 4 – “Divide by 1-Digit Numbers”

We began Unit 5 on October 19 and expect to assess the unit sometime around November 3.  The standards addressed in this unit are:

  • MAFS.4.OA.1.3 – Solve multi-step word problems posed with whole numbers and having whole number answers using the four operations, including problems in which remainders must be interpreted.  Students will represent these problems using equations with a letter standing for the unknown quantity.  Students will assess the reasonableness of answers using mental computation and estimation strategies including rounding.
  • MAFS.4.NBT.2.6 – Find whole number quotients and remainders with up to four dividends and one-digit divisors, using strategies based on place value, the properties of operations, and/or the relationship between multiplication and division.  Students will illustrate and explain the calculation by using equations, rectangular arrays, and/or area models.
